Verification: Verify upgrade for the first database

After you have attached a database, you can use the Upgrade Status page in Central Administration to check the status of upgrade on your site collections. After the upgrade process is complete, you can review the upgrade log file to see whether there were any issues during upgrade. Also, review each upgraded site to find and address any issues with how the content is displayed.

To view the Upgrade Status page

In Central Administration, click Upgrade and Migration, and then click Check upgrade status.

To open the Upgrade log file

The upgrade log file (.log) and the upgrade error log file (.err) are located at %COMMONPROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\14\LOGS. The logs are named in the following format: Upgrade-YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS-SSS.log, where YYYYMMDD is the date and HHMMSS-SSS is the time (hours in 24-hour clock format, minutes, seconds, and milliseconds). An example for an upgrade log is Upgrade-20090415-132126-374.log, and an example for an upgrade error log is Upgrade-20090415-132126-374.err.

Upgrade My Sites

If you are upgrading My Sites with your environment, you need to:

1. Attach and upgrade the Shared Services Provider (SSP) database to upgrade user profile information.

Follow the steps in "Add a content database to a Web application by using the Stsadm command-line tool" to attach and upgrade the SSP database.

2. Upgrade the My Site host URL.

Follow the steps below to set the new My Site host location.

3. Upgrade the My Sites.

Follow the steps in "Add a content database to a Web application by using the Stsadm command-line tool" to attach and upgrade the database or databases that contain My Sites. You can upgrade the My Sites at any time after you have upgraded the SSP database and the My Site host.

To upgrade the My Site host URL

1. In Central Administration, on the Manage Service Applications page, click the User Profile service that you want to associate with My Sites.

2. On the Manage Profile Service: User Profile Service page, click Setup My Sites.

3. Enter the information to set up My Sites, including the new My Site Host location and Personal site location.

4. The My Site Host is a site collection on the content database (such as http://webappURL/my). The personal site path is the Wildcard Inclusion Managed Path at which all My Sites are created. (For example, "personal" would create My Sites at http://webappURL/personal/username).

5. After you set up My Sites, you must reset Internet Information Services (IIS) by running iisreset /noforce at the command prompt.

Repeat the restore-and-add-database procedures for remaining databases

After you restore the first content database and verify the upgrade by reviewing the upgrade log file, you can continue by restoring and upgrading the next database or databases. You can attach multiple databases at the same time in separate Command Prompt windows to run multiple upgrades at one time. After you successfully restore and upgrade all the site, content, and shared services databases, you can review the sites to make sure that they were upgraded correctly

Verification: Verify upgrade for additional database

After upgrading any additional databases, view the Upgrade Status page to monitor progress and verify that the upgrade process is complete. Review the log file to identify any other issues, and then review each upgraded site to find and address any issues with how the content is displayed.

The whole premise of Silverlight was that it should be .NET for the browser. That is, a well-educated .NET programmer should be able to simply start a Silverlight project and work on it without knowing anything radically new.

It is arguable that Silverlight versions 1.0 through 3.0 haven’t really made this promise come true. Now we have Silverlight 4 and perhaps it is time to take the promise seriously.

Take a few simple steps and you might be surprised at just how quickly a Silverlight project can be yours and, more to the point, how little extra you need to learn.

The beta of Silverlight 4 was announced at PDC 2009 and was immediately made available for download. Perhaps more importantly, Visual Web Designer 2010 Express and Visual Studio 2010 betas both have tools incorporated that for the first time make working with Silverlight seem as easy as working with a forms or WPF-based application. Indeed, given Silverlight uses WPF, as long as you are familiar with it then creating a web application should be almost second nature.

First, download Visual Web Designer 2010 Express. You can use the full Visual Studio 2010 if you want to, but the Express version is all you need to evaluate Silverlight.

To upgrade to Silverlight 4, download the Tools for Visual Studio.

Once you have Web Designer 2010 installed, simply start a new project using File, New Project and select either Visual Basic or C# and then select the Silverlight group. Finally select Silverlight Application.

If you focus on the Silverlight application you should recognise the basic structure of a .NET application. There is the MainPage.xaml XAML file and its code behind MainPage.xaml.cs (or vb). This is where your application code mostly resides. The App.xaml and App.xaml.cs contain the code that gets your application started.

If you would like to simply run the application, use Debug,Start Debugging or press F5, then you should see a browser open with what looks like an empty page. If you dismiss the browser, or stop debugging, you can add some details to make the page look less empty. Load the MainPage.xaml file into the designer and if you are in the least bit familiar with WPF you should recognise the XAML code that generates the page.

By default a grid layout has been use and you can now use the Toolbox to drop a button onto the page. Again you should recognise the XAML code added by the designer.

If you now double-click on the button you will be transferred to the code editor ready to enter instructions into the button’s click event handler. To give the button something to do let’s just pop up a messagebox with a hello world message:

Now if you run the application again you will see a button and if you click it then a messagebox pops up as requested.

This should seem all so familiar that it verges on the dull and boring but… notice that this now works in any browser that has a Silverlight plug-in – e.g. Firefox as well as IE. It is also a client side technology. The page that you are viewing in the browser happens to be an ASP.NET page, but if you change the URL to end .html then you will see the same button and the same behaviour.

The test website set up by the Visual Web Developer contains an ASP.NET page and a standard HTML page which can be severed by any web server. What this means is that you can integrate Silverlight, and hence .NET, with any web technology you may already be using.

You can use much of what you already know about WPF and .NET in general. For example, if you want to draw a line on the page you can use:

This should be familiar as a use of a basic WPF drawing object, i.e. Line. The idea is you create the Line object, customise it and then add to the grid’s children after checking the XAML to discover the name generated for the grid.

If you run the program above you will find that it draws a retained mode diagonal line – i.e. there is no need to buffer the drawing to make the line persist when the page is covered, the redraw is automatic.

So what more is there to say about Silverlight? As we’ve hinted presumably you know it all already?! Well not quite. Silverlight is running in a browser and this makes a lot of difference. Your programs need to interact with the browser, its navigation and the user in ways that aren’t quite the same as when running a desktop application. In addition there is the not-unimportant fact that the Silverlight .NET Class framework isn’t an exact copy of the entire .NET Class framework that you are familiar with.

Instructions

1. Open Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio by clicking on it in your Windows Start Menu.

2. Click the "Connect" button in the Object Explorer window pane within SQL Server Management Studio, and then, from the pop-up menu, click on "Database Engine".

As many of you already know Microsoft is working on a MVC Framework for ASP.Net. MVC stands for “Model View Controller”. The Model View Controller is a design pattern and the idea is to separate business logic from the View (The View is the page that will display content, for example an .aspx page). The MVC in general maintain a clean separation of concerns, it will be easier to test business logic because it’s separated from the View and the View will not have any knowledge of the underlying model. Today when we build ASP.Net applications we have a code-behind which is a partial class of the “View”. With the code-behind model we can’t easy use Test Driven Development (TDD) or unit-test, at least is not easy. We can use the MVP (Model View Presenter), but that require us to write some extra code. With the MVC Framework it will be much easier to apply TDD.

The ASP.Net MVC Framework is integrated with ASP.Net and can use existing infrastructure like caching, session and profile etc. It will also support static and dynamic languages. The MVC Framework will only as it looks now work on ASP.Net 3.5. The .Net 3.5 will be released within any weeks now. The final build of the framework was done only some days ago. With the MVC Framework we will get a Project Template and great tool support. The MVC Framework is extensible and pluggable, so we can replace any system components, it also support Inversion Of Control (IoC)/Dependency Injection (DI). It’s the lifecycle that makes the model extensible. It looks like this:

Request -> Route (IRouteHandler) –> ControlFactory (IControllerFactory) -> Controller (IController) -> ViewFactory (IViewFactory) -> View (IView) -> Response

The Web Server gets browser request, for example http://localhost/Product, the Route to Controller is determined. The Controller is activated and the “Action” method on Controller is invoked. The Controller will then access the model. The Controller will then render View and passing in custom ViewData to the View. The View is rendered.
When we use the MVC Framework we will not specify an URL to a specific page and pass QueryStrings etc. Instead we use a cleaner URL. For example: http://localhost/Products or http://localhost/Producsts/Edit/4 etc.
We will map this URL to a specific controller which will be executed when we enter the URL. In the Global.asax we can create routes, which will be handled by an IRouteHandler. The following is the default way to add a route:

The Route that is added to the RouteTable will use an URL with the following format “[controller]/[Action]/[id]”. The controller is the controller that should be used, the action is the method in the controller that should be executed and the id is a value that can be passed to the controller’s method. If we use this format and enter a URL like the following: http://localhost/Product, the MVC Framework’s IControlleFactory will create and return the controller that belongs to the Product. It will try to locate a controller with the name ProductController. So if you enter an URL like http://localhost/Customer, it will try to instantiate a controller with the name CustomerController. When the controller is instantiated the Index method of the controller will be executed. The Defaults property of the Route class specify the default settings for the route, such as which action method of the controller is the default action (in this case the Index is the default one specified, this can also be specified on a controller with an attribute.), and the default values of the action method’s parameters that should be passed to the method. If we specify a URL like this one: http://localhost/Product/List the List method of the ProductController will be executed instead of the one that is default specified on the Route. The format of the URL specified for the Route was [controller]/[action]/[id], and the [action] in the format specifies which part of the URL is the name of the action method that should be executed. The [id] in the URL is the name of the action method’s parameter and the value enter at this location of an URL will be passed to the action method. If we enter a URL like this one: http://localhost/Product/Edit/4, the Edit method of the ProductController will be executed and the value 4 will be passed as a value to the Edit method’s id argument. The interface of the action method will look like this:

We can of course change the format of the URL if we want to pass more values to a controller’s action method, for example:

“[controller]/[action]/[id]/[pageIndex]”.

The RouteHandler property of the Route specifies which IRouteHandler we want to use.

If we don’t need to use the format “[controller]/[action]/[id]”, for example instead of letting the URL have the name of the controller we can skip the [controller] from the URL and instead specify the type of the controller we want to use when we setup the Route. For example:

Now when we have looked at how we can map a URL to a controller we can take a look at how we can implement a controller. A controller is a normal class that inherits the base class Controller located in the System.Web.Mvc namespace:

An action method is a normal method that has the ControllerActionAttribute specified. The ControllerActionAttribute is used because of security reason so not anyone can enter an action in the URL and execute it. The ControllerActionAttbibute has some properties also, for example the DefaultAction which can be used to specify the default action method of the controller.

The RenderView method will render the specified view. In this case the view with the name “MyView”. The RenderView will not do a call to Response.Redirect; instead it will use the Server.Execute method. By default the RenderView will look into a sub folder of your project with the name Views and then the sub folder with the name of the controller attached to the view.

The RenderView method is located in the Controller’s base class. This method will execute the IView’s RenderView method. We can create our own IViewFactory which will return our IView representation where we can create our own implementation of the RenderView. For example if we want to render a view based on another format than HTML, for example a jpg or gif image etc. We can create our own IView and make sure our RenderView will render binary data to the output stream instead of text.

The code-behind of the View inherits form the ViewPage instead of the Page object.

To send data to the View that should be displayed we can use the ViewData property of the Controller base class, or we can pass our data to the RenderView method:

By using the ViewData collection we can pass several of objects to our view that should be displayed. If we want to pass typed data to the View, we can inherit the Controller<T> where ViewData will be of type T. If we use the Controller<T>, the page which uses the Controller<T> needs to inherit the ViewPage<T> instead of ViewPage.

The MVC Framework doesn’t support postbacks and the use of ViewState, so most of the Controls shipped with ASP.Net can’t be used. Microsoft will probably add new Controls for the MVC Framework.

The MVC Framework will be added to the SP1 of VS 2008. This framework is for people that would like to use this MVC design pattern instead of the postback model. The MVC Framework will work better with Test Driven Development and unit-testing, so people that will make it easier to test web apps will also probably use this model. We will use it in every Web project in the future. With this model it would also be easier to maintain applications because we will have more control over the HTML. We don’t need to hook up to an event of a control and try to figure out how to add extra data into a GridView if we want to extend it etc. This model reminds of the old classic ASP, and it will be easier for people that work with classic ASP to move to ASP.net if they start using the MVC Framework.

Testing with MVC will as we mentioned before be much easier. We have several of interfaces that we can use. The Mockable intrinsic objects are IHttpContext, IHttpResponse and IHttpRequest. Because the MVC Framework have interfaces for IRouteHandler, IController, IControllerFactory, IView and IVewFactory we have more extensibility options. If we want to test a Controller’s action we can for example create our own IViewFactory and IView, by doing this we can change the implementation of the RenderView method.

To back up a database in SQL Server 2008

1.
On the database server, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server 2008, and then click SQL Server Management Studio.

2. In the Connect to Server box, fill in the connection information, and then click Connect.

3. After you connect to the appropriate instance of the SQL Server 2008 Database Engine, in Object Explorer, expand the server name.

4. Expand Databases, right-click the database that you want to back up, point to Tasks, and then click Back Up. The Back Up Database dialog box appears.

5. In the Source area, in the Database box, verify the database name.

6. In the Backup type box, select Full.

7. Under Backup component, select Database.

8. In the Backup set area, in the Name text box, either accept the default backup set name or type a new name.

9. In the Destination area, specify the type of backup destination by selecting Disk or Tape, and then specify a destination. To create a different destination, click Add.

10. Click OK to start the backup process.

Repeat the previous procedure to back up all the content and shared services databases that are used by Office SharePoint Server 2007 in your environment.

Restore the backup copy to the new farm

After you configure the new server farm, you can restore the backup copies of the databases on one of the following: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2008 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Cumulative Update 2, and SQL Server 2005 with SP3 and Cumulative Update 3. Note that you must restore to a 64-bit version of SQL Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2008 with SP1 and Cumulative Update 2, and SQL Server 2005 with SP3 and Cumulative Update 3. Start with one database, and then verify that the restoration has worked before you restore the other databases.

The following section provides procedures for restoring the backups.

To restore a backup copy of a database in SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition

1. In SQL Server Management Studio, right-click Databases, and then click Restore Database. The Restore Database dialog box appears.

2. In the Restore Database dialog box, on the General page, in the To database box, type the name of the database you are restoring.

3. In the To a point in time text box, keep the default (Most recent possible).

4. To specify the source and location of the backup sets to restore, click From device, and then click Browse to select the backup file.

5. In the Specify Backup dialog box, in the Backup media box, be sure that File is selected.

6. In the Backup location area, click Add.

7. In the Locate Backup File dialog box, select the file that you want to restore, and then click OK.

8. In the Select the backup sets to restore grid, select the Restore check box next to the most recent full backup.

Add the content databases to the Web applications

Before you add the content databases to the Web applications, you can use a Windows PowerShell cmdlet to verify that you have all the custom components that you need for that database.

To verify custom components are available by using Windows PowerShell

1. Verify that you meet the following minimum requirements: You are a member of the SharePoint_Shell_Access role on the configuration database and a member of the WSS_ADMIN_WPG local group on the computer where SharePoint 2010 Products is installed.

2. On the Start menu, click All Programs.

3. Click Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Products.

4. Click SharePoint 2010 Management Shell.

5. At the Windows PowerShell command prompt, type the following command:


Test-SPContent Database Name <database name> -WebApplication <URL> [-ServerInstance <ServerInstanceName>] [-Database Credentials <Domain\username>]

When you add the content databases, be sure that the root site for the Web application is included in the first content database that you add. In other words, before you continue, examine the root of the Web application in the original server farm to determine the first site collection. After you add the database that contains the root site, you can add the other content databases for the Web application in any order. You do not have to create any site collections to store the content before you add the database; this process creates the site collections for you. Be sure that you do not add any new site collections until you have restored all the content databases.

You must use the Stsadm command-line tool to add a content database to a Web application. Using the SharePoint Central Administration pages to attach a content database is not supported for upgrading.

Note:
You cannot add the same content database more than once to a farm, even on different Web applications. Each site collection in a content database has a GUID that is associated with it, which is registered in the configuration database. Therefore, you cannot add the same site collection twice to the farm, even in separate Web applications. Although you can successfully attach the database in this situation, you will be unable to start the site collection.


If you need a duplicate copy of a site collection in the same farm, first attach the database that contains the site collection to a separate farm, and then use the Stsadm backup and restore operations to copy the site collection over to the other farm. The Stsadm backup and restore process creates a new GUID for the site collection.

Add a content database to a Web application by using the Stsadm command-line tool

To add a content database to a Web application, you must use the addcontentdb operation.

Run the following command:

Layout Templates for Wizard Control

In ASP.NET 3.5, the Wizard and CreateUserWizard controls generate an HTML table element that is used for visual formatting. In ASP.NET 4 you can use a LayoutTemplate element to specify the layout. If you do this, the HTML table element is not generated. In the template, you create placeholder controls to indicate where items should be dynamically inserted into the control. (This is similar to how the template model for the ListView control works.)

New HTML Formatting Options for the CheckBoxList and RadioButtonList Controls

ASP.NET 3.5 uses HTML table elements to format the output for the CheckBoxList and RadioButtonList controls. To provide an alternative that does not use tables for visual formatting, ASP.NET 4 adds two new options to the RepeatLayout enumeration:

- UnorderedList. This option causes the HTML output to be formatted by using ul and li elements instead of a table.
- OrderedList. This option causes the HTML output to be formatted by using ol and li elements instead of a table.

Header and Footer Elements for the Table Control

In ASP.NET 3.5, the Table control can be configured to render thead and tfoot elements by setting the TableSection property of the TableHeaderRow class and the TableFooterRow class. In ASP.NET 4 these properties are set to the appropriate values by default.

CSS and ARIA Support for the Menu Control

In ASP.NET 3.5, the Menu control uses HTML table elements for visual formatting, and in some configurations it is not keyboard-accessible. ASP.NET 4 addresses these problems and improves accessibility in the following ways:

- The generated HTML is structured as an unordered list (ul and li elements).
- CSS is used for visual formatting.
- The menu behaves in accordance with ARIA standards for keyboard access. You can use arrow keys to navigate menu items.
- ARIA role and property attributes are added to the generated HTML. (Attributes are added by using JavaScript instead of included in the HTML, to avoid generating HTML that would cause markup validation errors.)

Styles for the Menu control are rendered in a style block at the top of the page, instead of inline with the rendered HTML elements. If you want to use a separate CSS file so that you can modify the menu styles, you can set the Menu control's new IncludeStyleBlock property to false, in which case the style block is not generated.

Valid XHTML for the HTMLForm Control

In ASP.NET 3.5, the HtmlForm control (which is created implicitly by the <form runat="server"> tag) renders an HTML form element that has both name and id attributes. The name attribute is deprecated in XHTML 1.1. Therefore, this control does not render the name attribute in ASP.NET 4.

Maintaning Backward Compability in Control Rendering

An existing ASP.NET Web site might have code in it that assumes that controls are rendering HTML the way they do in ASP.NET 3.5. To avoid causing backward compatibility problems when you upgrade the site to ASP.NET 4, you can have ASP.NET continue to generate HTML the way it does in ASP.NET 3.5 after you upgrade the site.

Dynamic Data provides the presentation and data layer support for rendering these controls. When you enable Dynamic Data for data-bound controls, you get the following benefits:

- Setting default values for data fields. Dynamic Data enables you to provide default values at run time for fields in a data control.
- Interacting with the database without creating and registering a data model.
- Automatically validating the data that is entered by the user without writing any code.

New Field Templates for URLs and E-mail Addresses

ASP.NET 4 introduces two new built-in field templates, EmailAddress.ascx and Url.ascx. These templates are used for fields that are marked as EmailAddress or Url using the DataTypeAttribute attribute. For EmailAddress objects, the field is displayed as a hyperlink that is created by using the mailto: protocol. When users click the link, it opens the user's e-mail client and creates a skeleton message. Objects typed as Url are displayed as ordinary hyperlinks.

Creating Links with the DynamicHyperlink Control

Dynamic Data uses the new routing feature that was added in the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 to control the URLs that users see when they access the Web site. The new DynamicHyperLink control makes it easy to build links to pages in a Dynamic Data site.

Support for Inheritance in the Data Model

Both the ADO.NET Entity Framework and LINQ to SQL support inheritance in their data models. An example of this might be a database that has an InsurancePolicy table. It might also contain CarPolicy and HousePolicy tables that have the same fields as InsurancePolicy and then add more fields. Dynamic Data has been modified to understand inherited objects in the data model and to support scaffolding for the inherited tables.

Support for Many-to-Many Relationships (Entity Framework Only)

The Entity Framework has rich support for many-to-many relationships between tables, which is implemented by exposing the relationship as a collection on an Entity object. New field templates (ManyToMany.ascx and ManyToMany_Edit.ascx) have been added to provide support for displaying and editing data that is involved in many-to-many relationships.

New Attributes to Control Display and Support Enumerations

The DisplayAttribute has been added to give you additional control over how fields are displayed. The DisplayNameAttribute attribute in earlier versions of Dynamic Data enabled you to change the name that is used as a caption for a field. The new DisplayAttribute class lets you specify more options for displaying a field, such as the order in which a field is displayed and whether a field will be used as a filter. The attribute also provides independent control of the name that is used for the labels in a GridView control, the name that is used in a DetailsView control, the help text for the field, and the watermark used for the field (if the field accepts text input).

The EnumDataTypeAttribute class has been added to let you map fields to enumerations. When you apply this attribute to a field, you specify an enumeration type. Dynamic Data uses the new Enumeration.ascx field template to create UI for displaying and editing enumeration values. The template maps the values from the database to the names in the enumeration.

Enhanced Support for Filters

Dynamic Data 1.0 had built-in filters for Boolean columns and foreign-key columns. The filters did not let you specify the order in which they were displayed. The new DisplayAttribute attribute addresses this by giving you control over whether a column appears as a filter and in what order it will be displayed.

An additional enhancement is that filtering support has been rewritten to use the new QueryExtender feature of Web Forms. This lets you create filters without requiring knowledge of the data source control that the filters will be used with. Along with these extensions, filters have also been turned into template controls, which lets you add new ones. Finally, the DisplayAttribute class mentioned earlier allows the default filter to be overridden, in the same way that UIHint allows the default field template for a column to be overridden.

Overview

Much of the complexity of an application lives in the logic and processing that goes on behind the scenes.  Issues such as asynchronous or parallel execution and generally coordinating the tasks to respond to user requests or service requests can quickly lead application developers back down into the low level coding of handles, callbacks, synchronization etc.  As developers, we need the same power and flexibility of a declarative programming model for the internals of an application as we have for the user interface in Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF).    Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) provides the declarative framework for building application and service logic and gives developers a higher level language for handling asynchronous, parallel tasks and other complex processing.

Having a runtime to manage memory and objects has freed us to focus more on the important business aspects of writing code.  Likewise, having a runtime that can manage the complexities of coordinating asynchronous work provides a set of features that improves developer productivity.  WF is a set of tools for declaring your workflow (your business logic), activities to help define the logic and control flow, and a runtime for executing the resulting application definition.  In short, WF is about using a higher level language for writing applications, with the goal of making developers more productive, applications easier to manage, and change quicker to implement.  The WF runtime not only executes your workflows for you, it also provides services and features important when writing application logic such persistence of state, bookmarking and resumption of business logic, all of which lead to thread and process agility enabling scale up and scale out of business processes. 

What’s New in WF 4

In version 4 of the Microsoft® .NET Framework, Windows Workflow Foundation introduces a significant amount of change from the previous versions of the technology that shipped as part of .NET 3.0 and 3.5.  In fact, the team revisited the core of the programming model, runtime and tooling and has re-architected each one to increase performance and productivity as well as to address the important feedback garnered from customer engagements using the previous versions.  The significant changes made were necessary to provide the best experience for developers adopting WF and to enable WF to continue to be a strong foundational component that you can build on in your applications. I will introduce the high level changes here, and throughout the paper each topic will get more in depth treatment. 

Before we continue, it is important to understand that backwards compatibility was also a key goal in this release.  The new framework components are found primarily in the System.Activities.* assemblies while the backwards compatible framework components are found in the System.Workflow.* assemblies.  The System.Workflow.* assemblies are part of the .NET Framework 4 and provide complete backward compatibility so you can migrate your application to .NET 4 with no changes to your workflow code. Throughout this paper we will use the name WF4 to refer to the new components found in the System.Activities.* assemblies and WF3 to refer to the components found in the System.Workflow.* assemblies. 

Designers

One of the most visible areas of improvement is in the workflow designer. Usability and performance were key goals for the team for the VS 2010 release.  The designer now supports the ability to work with much larger workflows without a degradation in performance and designers are all based on Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), taking full advantage of the rich user experience one can build with the declarative UI framework.  Activity developers will use XAML to define the way their activities look and interact with users in a visual design environment.  In addition, rehosting the workflow designer in your own applications to enable non-developers to view and interact with your workflows is now much easier. 

Data Flow

In WF3, the flow of data in a workflow was opaque.  WF4 provides a clear, concise model for data flow and scoping in the use of arguments and variables.  These concepts, familiar to all developers, simplify both the definition of data storage, as well as the flow of the data into and out of workflows and activities.  The data flow model also makes more obvious the expected inputs and outputs of a given activity and improves performance of the runtime as data is more easily managed.
 

Flowchart

A new control flow activity called Flowchart has been added to make it possible for developers to use the Flowchart model to define a workflow.  The Flowchart more closely resembles the concepts and thought processes that many analysts and developers go through when creating solutions or designing business processes.  Therefore, it made sense to provide an activity to make it easy to model the conceptual thinking and planning that had already been done.  The Flowchart enables concepts such as returning to previous steps and splitting logic based on a single condition, or a Switch / Case logic. 

Programming Model

The WF programming model has been revamped to make it both simpler and more robust.  Activity is the core base type in the programming model and represents both workflows and activities.  In addition, you no longer need to create a WorkflowRuntime to invoke a workflow, you can simply create an instance and execute it, simplifying unit testing and application scenarios where you do not want to go through the trouble of setting up a specific environment.  Finally, the workflow  programming model becomes a fully declarative composition of activities, with no code-beside, simplifying workflow authoring.

Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) Integration

The benefits of WF most certainly apply to both creating services and consuming or coordinating service interactions.  A great deal of effort went into enhancing the integration between WCF and WF.  New messaging activities, message correlation, and improved hosting support, along with fully declarative service definition are the major areas of improvement. 

Getting Started with Workflow

The best way to understand WF is to start using it and applying the concepts.  We will cover several core concepts around the underpinnings of workflow, and then walk through creating a few simple workflows to illustrate how those concepts relate to each other. 

Workflow Structure

Activities are the building blocks of WF and all activities ultimately derive from Activity.  A terminology note - Activities are a unit of work in WF. Activities can be composed together into larger Activities. When an Activity is used as a top-level entry point, it is called a "Workflow", just like Main is simply another function that represents a top level entry point to CLR programs. This for example:

Data flow in workflows

The first thought most people have when they think about workflow is the business process or the flow of the application.  However, just as critical as the flow is the data that drives the process and the information that is collected and stored during the execution of the workflow.  In WF4, the storage and management of data has been a prime area of design consideration. 

There are three main concepts to understand with regard to data: Variables, Arguments, and Expressions.  The simple definitions for each are that variables are for storing data, arguments are for passing data, and expressions are for manipulating data. 

Variables-storing data

Variables in workflows are very much like the variables you are used to in imperative languages: they describe a named location for data to be stored and they follow certain scoping rules.  To create a variable, you first determine at what scope the variable needs to be available.  Just as you might have variables in code that are available at the class or method level, your workflow variables can be defined at different scopes.

Arguments-passing data

Arguments are defined on activities and define the flow of data into and out of the activity.  You can think of arguments to activities much like you use arguments to methods in imperative code.  Arguments can be In, Out, or In/Out and have a name and type.  When building a workflow, you can define arguments on the root activity which enables data to be passed into your workflow when it is invoked.  You define arguments on the workflow much as you do variables using the argument window. 

As you add activities to your workflow, you will need to configure the arguments for the activities, and this is primarily done by referencing in-scope variables or using expressions, which I will discuss next.  In fact, the Argument base class contains an Expression property which is an Activity that returns a value of the argument type, so all of these options are related and rely on Activity. 

Expression-acting on data

Expressions are activities you can use in your workflow to operate on data.  Expressions can be used in places where you use Activity and are interested in a return value, which means you can use expressions in setting arguments or to define conditions on activities like the While or If activities.  Remember that most things in WF4 derive from Activity and expressions are no different, they are a derivative of Activity<TResult> meaning they return a value of a specific type.  In addition, WF4 includes several common expressions for referring to variables and arguments as well as Visual Basic expressions.  Because of this layer of specialized expressions, the expressions you use to define arguments can include code, literal values, and variable references.

If you have a model object with a property named id, you may have run into an issue where your model state is invalid when binding to that model even though you don’t have an “Id” field in your form.

The following scenario should clear up what we mean. Suppose you have the following simple model with two properties.

    public int Id { get; set; }
    public string Name { get; set; }
}

And you are creating a view to create a new Product. In such a view, you obviously don’t want the user to specify the Id.

However, when you post it to an action method like so:

You’ll find that the model state is not valid. What gives!?

Well the issue here is that the id property of Product is being set to an empty string. Why is that happening when there is no “Id” field in your form? The answer to that, my friend, is routing.

When you crack open a freshly created ASP.NET MVC 1.0 application, you’ll notice the following default route defined.

    “Default”
    “{controller}/{action}/{id}”;
    new { controller = “Home”, action = “Index”, id = “” }
);

To refresh your memory, that’s a route with three URL parameters (controller, action, id), each with a default value ("home", "index", "").

What this means is if you post a form to the URL /Home/Index, without specifying an “ID” in the URL, you’ll still have an empty string route value for the key “id”. And as it turns out, we use route values to bind to action method parameters.

In the scenario above, it just so happens that your model object happens to have a property with the same name, “Id”, as that route value, so the model binder attempts to set the value of the id property to empty string, and since id is non-nullable int, we get a type conversion error.

In ASP.NET MVC 2 RC 2, we added an MVC specific means to work around this issue via the new Url.Parameters.Optional. If you set the default value for a URL parameter to this special value, MVC makes sure to remove that key from the route value dictionary so that it doesn’t exist.

Thus the fix to the above scenario is to change the default route to:

With this in place, if there’s no ID in the URL, there won’t be a value for ID in the route values and thus we’ll never try to set a property named “Id” unless you have a form field named “Id”.
